In addition, a supplement can ensure that both you and your baby are getting enough EPA and DHA each day as it is a challenge to get enough through food alone. While it was once though that the human body could convert ALA in flaxseed to the EPA and DHA we need, current research shows that such conversion rarely and inefficiently. Adequate intake of Omega 3 fatty acids is essential to maintaining the balanced production of hormone-like substances called prostaglandins.
Prostaglandins help regulate many important physiological functions including blood pressure, blood clotting , nerve transmission, the inflammatory and allergic responses, the functions of the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract, and the production of other hormones. Depending on the type and amount of fatty acids we consume, certain types of prostaglandins may be produced in large quantities, while others may not be produced at all, and this prostaglandin imbalance can have negative consequences on our health and well-being.
The role of omega-3s in producing beneficial prostaglandins may explain why they have been shown to have so many health benefits, including the promoting cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and a healthy immune response.
New studies continue to identify more and more omega-3 benefits for a wide range of health issues. The omega-3 DHA is generally known as the most important omega-3 for pregnancy because it is a critical building block of the brain, retina, and nervous system.
A growing number of studies in both human infants and animals shows a correlation between omega-3 intake, especially DHA, and cognitive and visual function, and overall brain development. In humans, brain development undergoes its most rapid and complex growth during the last trimester of pregnancy and the first two years after birth.
Furthermore, studies show that infants whose mothers supplemented with DHA during pregnancy had healthier immune function. The omega-3s EPA and DHA support healthy labor and delivery outcomes and have also been shown to support a healthy mood. Depletion persists months postpartum and, as you can imagine, gets worse with multiple pregnancies. This explains why supplementing with omega-3 fish oil or algae oil is so important. While fish can contain environmental toxins like mercury that accumulate during its life span, these toxins can be virtually eliminated during the manufacture and processing of fish oil, with the use of high quality raw materials and a technologically advanced refining process utilizing advanced distillation technologies.
Reputable fish oil manufacturer should be able to provide documentation of third-party lab results that show the purity levels of their fish oil, down to the particles per trillion level. Some brands are of higher quality than others; asking for this documentation is a way to ensure that your fish oil supplement is pure and safe. Look for a manufacturer who is transparent — anyone can say they produce quality fish oil but not everyone can prove it. The only objective proof of fish oil quality and purity are third-party test results that verify adherence to strict standards, so look for a manufacturer that freely offers these test results.
These standards guarantee high-quality fish oil by setting maximum allowances for toxins, heavy metals, and oxidation, so be sure to buy from a manufacturer that can document that their products meet or surpass these standards. This provides evidence of product efficacy. A simple phone call to the company or a quick review of their website should take care of all of your questions. Pregnant women should be sure to take a daily supplement that provides a minimum of mg of DHA at the very least.
Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the world. Symptoms include sadness, lethargy and a general loss of interest in life 1 , 2. Anxiety is also a very common disorder, and is characterized by constant worry and nervousness 3.
Interestingly, studies have found that people who consume omega-3s regularly are less likely to be depressed 4 , 5. What's more, when people with depression or anxiety start taking omega-3 supplements, their symptoms get better 6 , 7 , 8. There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids: Of the three, EPA appears to be the best at fighting depression 9. One study even found EPA to be as effective against depression as Prozac, an antidepressant drug DHA, a type of omega-3, is a major structural component of the brain and retina of the eye When you don't get enough DHA, vision problems may arise 12 , Interestingly, getting enough omega-3 has been linked to a reduced risk of macular degeneration, one of the world's leading causes of permanent eye damage and blindness 14 , Therefore, it's no surprise that infants fed a DHA-fortified formula have better eyesight than infants fed a formula without it Getting enough omega-3s during pregnancy has been associated with numerous benefits for the child, including 18 , 19 , Heart attacks and strokes are the world's leading causes of death Decades ago, researchers observed that fish-eating communities had very low rates of these diseases.
This was later found to be partially due to omega-3 consumption 22 , Since then, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have numerous benefits for heart health For some people, omega-3s can also lower LDL the "bad" cholesterol.
However, the evidence is mixed and some studies actually find increases in LDL 39 , Interestingly, despite all these beneficial effects on heart disease risk factors, there is no convincing evidence that omega-3 supplements can prevent heart attacks or strokes. Many studies find no benefit 41 , Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD is a behavioral disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity Several studies have found that children with ADHD have lower blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids, compared to their healthy peers 44 , What's more, numerous studies have found that omega-3 supplements can actually reduce the symptoms of ADHD.
Omega-3s help improve inattention and the ability to complete tasks. They also decrease hyperactivity, impulsiveness, restlessness and aggression 46 , 47 , 48 , Recently, researchers evaluated the evidence behind different treatments for ADHD. They found fish oil supplementation to be one of the most promising treatments Metabolic syndrome is a collection of conditions.
It includes central obesity belly fat , high blood pressure, insulin resistance , high triglycerides and low HDL levels. It is a major public health concern, since it increases your risk of developing many other diseases. These include heart disease and diabetes Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce insulin resistance and inflammation, and improve heart disease risk factors in people with metabolic syndrome 52 , 53 , Inflammation is incredibly important.
We need it to fight infections and repair damage in the body. However, sometimes inflammation persists for a long time, even without an infection or injury being present. This is called chronic long-term inflammation. It is known that long-term inflammation can contribute to almost every chronic Western disease, including heart disease and cancer 55 , 56 , Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the production of molecules and substances linked to inflammation, such as inflammatory eicosanoids and cytokines 58 , Studies have consistently shown a link between higher omega-3 intake and reduced inflammation 8 , 60 , In autoimmune diseases , the immune system mistakes healthy cells for foreign cells and starts attacking them.
Type 1 diabetes is one prime example. In this disease, the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Omega-3s can help fight some of these diseases, and may be especially important during early life. Studies show that getting enough omega-3s during your first year of life is linked to a reduced risk of many autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes, autoimmune diabetes in adults and multiple sclerosis 62 , 63 , Omega-3s have also been shown to help treat lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease and psoriasis 65 , 66 , 67 , Low omega-3 levels have been reported in people with psychiatric disorders Studies have shown that omega-3 supplements can reduce the frequency of mood swings and relapses in people with both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder 69 , 70 , Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids may also decrease violent behavior Several studies have shown that higher omega-3 intake is linked to decreased age-related mental decline and a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease 73 , 74 , Additionally, one study found that people who eat fatty fish tend to have more gray matter in the brain.
This is brain tissue that processes information, memories and emotions Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the Western world, and omega-3 fatty acids have long been claimed to reduce the risk of certain cancers. Additionally, omega-3 consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. However, not all studies agree on this 79 , 80 , Asthma is a chronic lung disease with symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing.
